Before the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons, various Native American tribes, including the Tonkawa and Lipan Apache Nations and the Comanche Nation, called the region that is now known as Leander home. The territory was later ruled by the Spanish, followed by Mexico, but the Native Americans retained power. Throughout the 1840s, other pioneer families came, and Tumlinson Fort, now the Blockhouse Creek neighbourhood, was built for their security.
The town was first known as Bagdad and situated one mile to the west of where it is now. It changed its name to Leander in 1855. Bagdad, Tennessee, the hometown of one of the first settlers, inspired the town’s name. The Austin and Northwest Railroad started building a new rail line to connect Austin and Abilene in 1881. The town of Bagdad was skirted when the train line was built one mile to the east even though it looked as though it would pass directly through it. The Austin and Northwest Railroad sold land to several Baghdad businesses and residents who relocated to be close to the new railway station. The Hon. Leander Brown, a former mayor of Austin and a representative of a railroad business, was honoured with the name Leander for this community.
In order to preserve and share our history, the City of Leander established the Leander Historical Preservation Commission in 2017. The LHPC is making a lot of effort to expand the prehistoric and historical knowledge of our community. Bagdad, established in 1854, was once a prosperous town from which Leander sprung (1 mi. W). A new town was established and given the name Leander Brown after a railroad executive when the Austin & Northwestern Railroad bypassed Bagdad in 1882. (1817-89). The older community’s residences and businesses swiftly relocated to the new location alongside the rail line. In 1882, the post office was relocated here from Bagdad. The 1893-founded school has expanded into Williamson County’s biggest school district. Leander, which was formerly in a rural area, had had a surge in recent years as a result of Highland Lakes construction. (1975)
